TODAY’S LOVE TOPIC:

Give an example in your life when you have felt/given unconditional love. What defines unconditional love for you? Is it possible to love someone with no strings attached?

Hi loves! By now you all probably know I love love. I’ve always had since I was a wee little girl. One of the reasons why I heart love is because we are all creatures who crave this feeling. It’s something money can never buy, yet it’s the most valuable commodity on earth. Who wouldn’t be fascinated by this sentiment? One of the many intriguing aspects about love is the conditions to which we love. Is there such a thing as unconditional love?

I say yes and no.

I know my answer is hypocritical, but I do believe it depends. Before I became a mom, I felt like I understood and was both the recipient and giver of unconditional love. To a certain extent, I still believe this, but I had no idea what unconditional love felt like until I became ShuGar Baby’s mama.

Allow me to explain. We learn to love our parents because of what they have “given” us in the way of love, care, affection, food, a home, etc. We love our friends because they provide us with their companionship. When we are in a relationship, there is a certain reciprocity in this love. After all, you both recite this love mutuality when you say your wedding vows.

I for one would not love or marry someone if they did not love me back. I love myself too much to put myself through that torture. I acknowledge that there is such a thing as one-sided love, but I don’t believe it ever reaches the depth in our hearts as a love shared between two people, at least not when it comes to relationships.

However, there is one exception: The love you have for your child.

Unlike any of the other loves I previously mentioned, this mama love knows no bounds and has no restrictions. It is the purest type of love because there really is no expectation of reciprocity. I know this to be very true as I am madly in love with our newborn Camden. Camden really does not do anything to return the love. I feed him, change him, hug him, kiss him, bathe him, carry him, rock him to sleep, and adore him all with nothing in return. He gives me an occasional smile, but that’s about all I get.

And yet I would do anything for this little boy because the love I have for him is unconditional. It knows no bounds. Wow! Doesn’t this just blow your mind? I never knew this kind of love until now. I feel blessed to be the giver of this type of love because in life this is the greatest gift you can give another human being.

Want proof that unconditional love exists? Ask any parent. They will tell you that they love their child, despite all the challenges parenting may present. They don’t care if their little one doesn’t love them back. Their love is limitless. I have experienced even further proof. I love how Camden Baby adores his daddy. I see the relationship they have developed and it is one that will melt your heart. Camden’s eyes light up the minute he sees his daddy. He coos and smiles at him more than at me or anyone else. Guess what? Doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make me love him any less. I am glad Camden hearts his daddy. The love I have for him is unconditional. It doesn’t matter if I may not his favorite. I will love him forever and there are no strings attached.

The love we have for our children is the rawest of loves. It defines true love.
