Dia de Los Muertos: Dedication to Tia Petra

I love the Mexican celebrations for El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).  It’s such a rich tradition in Mexico celebrated in the end of October/beginning of November. There are other cultures with similar customs, but I am most familiar with Mexico’s Day of the Dead. It is a day in which we celebrate our loved ones who have passed away by creating altars to commemorate their lives.  It is not a day of mourning. On the contrary, it is a joyous and colorful celebration where we honor those who have left this Earth, but remain in our hearts.

Advanced Maternal Age

Mommy’s Corner is a weekly series exploring our journey in becoming parents, our love for our ShuGar baby, and general topics related to mommyhood.

One thing I have heard over and over again in all my doctor’s appointments is about my “advanced maternal age.” Yup, folks, I am 35 years old and pregnant with my first child. Quick! Someone sound the maternity alarm! I know in LA this seems pretty normal, but in science world it is “abnormal” and, therefore, requires a whole lot of separate, more extensive testing.

Halloween Couples

It ain’t no secret I am Hallowen fanatic. Just because I am adult, it doesn’t mean I have to stop being a child-at-heart. Plus, who doesn’t want an excuse to dress up, have fun, be creative and fantasize about being somewhat you are not for only a day?  Since my sweet Mr. ShuGar allows me to be this Halloween nerd, we like to dress up in couple’s costumes.  I am lucky that Mr. ShuGar appreciates being silly.

Last year, he was a nerd and was his nerdette, with a blouse that said, “I love my nerd.”  I can’t just pick any costume because Mr. ShuGar has to be down with it.  Above are some fun and creative DIY couple’s costumes that aren’t too expensive or complicated.  Plus, I think your man wouldn’t be hesitant in dressing up in these. I am obsessed with the Beetlejuice one! Although, I don’t know if Mr. ShuGar would put all that makeup on. Isn’t the Mary Poppins and Bert costume divine? I heart it! Oh, and that Moonrise Kingdom costume so sweet. One of my fave movies from last year.

Do you have any creative costumes you like?

Hugs, all!

Some LA Fall Things

It ain’t no secret that Los Angeles isn’t really known for its change of seasons. Mr. ShuGar says this is the one thing that he misses from growing up in Michigan. Nonetheless, there are some LA fall things which I cherish, even though they may pale in comparison to the rest of the country’s beautiful changes of color.

  • The Ocean Air Smells Different – I live a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean and it has its distinct smell every season. For Fall, it’s crisper and stronger, especially in the morning. The marina fog stays longer these mornings and you can actually “see” the fall ocean air. When you leave for work, it hugs you.

  • LA Fall Fashion – I know it may not be colder for most, but for me I can certainly feel it. This calls for me to bring out my cute scarves and hats. They don’t keep you too warm because, after all, it’s not that chilly. Yet, you see LA fashionistas bust out with their version of Fall fashion and it’s fun to see. Scarves and hats are the perfect accessories to welcome this LA season.

  • Night Walks – The average Fall night looks so beautiful and serene. We take occasional walks late night to enjoy the quiet of the city. There’s a deeper darkness in the sky. It’s mesmerizing.

  • Movie Nights – It’s as if the weather tells all of us to go see movies. This time of year Mr. ShuGar and I make a point of going to the movie theater and seeing the latest flick. It’s no coincidence that the Oscar-worthy films are out at this time. It’s so much fun to begin to see the contenders. Angelenos take their movies very seriously, at least in the theaters we go to. People clap, laugh, recite lines…it’s quite the movie-going experience! I jump at the chance of seeing The Shining in any public venue!

  • Blue Blanket Time – Mr. ShuGar and I unwind every day by watching some TV in the evenings. I’m sure everyone has a similar routine. Something I love to do in the Fall is cuddle up next to him with my fuzzy blue blanket while enjoying trashy TV. We only unveil this blanket when Fall comes and I love how it feels against my skin, so soft & cozy.

  • Halloween Neighborhood Fun – I am so impressed with my neighborhood’s Halloween spirit. Mr. ShuGar and I drove around last weekend and stumbled upon some rad Halloween decorations. Check out my instagram to see what we saw. It was scary good! I love seeing people really take Halloween seriously. We always get a bunch of cute trick-or-treaters and it’s one of my favorite days of the year.

What do you love about Fall in your city? How does it make you feel?

I send everyone a warm, Fall hug!

House Wants

|1| Copper Dinnerware|2| Sofa – Similar|3| Starbust Mirror  |4| White Wall Hooks   |5| Happily Ever After Pillow

Hi all! I hope everyone had a fun weekend. I got the chance to finally see Rosemary’s Baby. I know, I am with child and I have a morbid curiosity to see this movie now. What can I say? I love scary (good) movies. It was good, definitely, but not too scary.

Well, now that I am a big girl, I dream of wanting big girl things. For example, I fantasize all the time of what we’d do in our house with an endless amount of time and money.  So I go to Pinterest to start pinning my dream home aspirations.

Above are some of the things I am currently coveting, but this is certainly not an exhaustive list. My home decor aesthetic is clean, modern with a touch of vintage, and a whole lot of whimsy.  Little by little I will make this dream a reality. For the time being, enjoy my home fantasy!

Happy Monday to you!

Mrs. ShuGar Reviews: Sunset Boulevard

Surely you have heard, “Alright Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” I had known of this quote way before I knew it was from the classic film, Sunset Boulevard.  It was not until I began to date Mr. ShuGar that I discovered this classic gem and I have been obsessed ever since. One of the beauties of being with a filmmaker is discovering movies that are outside my normal “comfort zone”, only to realize the greatness of this art form beyond my wildest imagination.

I would love to share with you the films I have discovered so that you, too, can enjoy them.  Sunset Boulevard is one of those films that has challenged my preconceived notions of what an “old”, black and white movie could be.

Dear ShuGar Baby: We Love You Already

Instead of writing every blog post about our lovely ShuGar baby, I have decided to create a weekly post on Wednesdays dedicated to all things baby. I’ll call it Mommy’s Corner and I’ll share our journey in becoming parents and all the magic around this special time.

Now, a letter to our baby…..

Dear ShuGar Baby,

You are no longer a dream, but instead a reality! Your daddy and I wished on every star in the sky that you would come into our world and our prayers have been answered.  You are inside my tummy and you are loved by mommy and daddy already.
